Home Exercise Programs

As movement medicine specialist, your physical therapist will prescribe you effective Home exercise program. One of the biggest components of success in physical therapy is the home exercise program, or HEP. One could say the HEP is up to fifty percent or more of the reason you will achieve better outcomes; considering the average physical therapy visit ranges from 60 minutes once or twice a week, which may not be enough time to make the drastic change you need. When you attend a session with Divine Spine therapist, your session will consist of various parts. To minimize the pain that the patient will experience, the physical therapist may soothe the injured area with manual therapy and massage.

They will also help the patient to perform various stretches in a safe manner, and guide the patient through many exercises. At the end of the session, the physical therapist may also assign a home physical therapy program. These home exercises are customized for individual patient.

According to the American Physical Therapy Association, “Physical therapists can teach patients how to prevent or manage their condition so that they will achieve long-term health benefits.”

If we want you to become independent in the management of your condition, we need to discharge you with a HEP to maintain the current therapeutic benefit from physical therapy in order to prevent recurrence.

The home exercise program will most likely be prescribed on the first day (few exercises to gate your pain) and be geared toward your goals and the treatment that made you feel and/or move better and functionally independent. For example, if the radiating symptoms from your low back lessened after treatment on your back, your therapist will send you home with an activity to reinforce that movement on day one.

Make sure your therapist teaches you the exercise and provides instructions on a take-home piece of paper that also includes frequency, duration, and number of sets and reps so you know what is expected of you.

At divine spine as your Physical therapist is certified yoga instructor she will also give you effective yoga asanas if requested to maintain all gains and prevent reoccurrence of your symptoms.

Staying motivated and adhering to your HEP can be difficult, but it likely will speed your pain relief or return to function. For more information contact us at Monroe, NJ center.
